Scenic Sounds

the songs that saved your life

Check out this little gem I stumbled upon. I’ve always enjoyed Kimbra’s take on looping her own vocals and I really like how she incorporates that into this cover. A polished up studio version would be pretty cool.

CRAFT SPELLS - Leave My Shadow

Looks like we can an expect Craft Spells latest release, the Gallery EP, to be a splendid piece of work. Gallery is due out on May 15th.

Krokodil by St. Vincent

Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent, has clawed her way to the top of many play lists lately. Clark usually shows off brilliant compositions consisting of eerily high vocals and an orchestra of ghostly sounds. However, her latest single, Krokodil, breaks away from what many would expect to hear. Instead of the demented sounding vocals usually passing through Clark’s sinister smile, we get fuzzed out vocals as she calls upon the muse of thrash, coating her familiar sound with a much more direct kind of hysteria. Not a bad thing at all in my opinion, as it fits in very well with much of her work upon listen.

Chew

Saw these guys play this past Saturday at the 2012 Coachella Music & Arts Festival. Unfortunately, due to poor planning on my part I am unable to provide pictures because my phone was dead during most of that weekend. But take my word for it when I say these guys really are a great band. The above is the latest track from the young London quartet released earlier this month. They seem to be sticking to their initial formula: Capturing the essence of that grungy 90’s rock and presenting it to a generation hungry for nostalgia. Unfortunately we still have yet to see an official announcement regarding a followup to last year’s popular self titled LP. But it’s nice to see something new without a radical shift in sound.

M. Ward
The First Time I Ran Away

Was wondering what good ol’ Matthew Ward has been up to lately. Well, you know, other then his work with She and Him, as well as his other collaborations. He is playing at coachella after all, but hasn’t released anything since his 2009 release Hold Time. Then, out of the blue, he drops this magnificent new song The First Time I Ran Away. Ward has also announced his new album A Wasteland Companion set for release in April this year. Guests on the album will include Zooey Deschanel, Mike Mogis, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Howe Gelb of Giant Sand, PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, and more.

Little Joy
The Next Time Around

Came across this group the other day. I’m very upset that I wasn’t aware of these guys when they were actually active. Little Joy is a side project spawning from a collaboration between  Los Hermanos singer/guitarist Rodrigo AmaranteThe Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti and Binki Shapiro. The vocal style the group takes on just makes me melt and is extremely similar to what you might hear from The Strokes. However, it comes packaged with music from another time. Their self titled debut (and only) album should be on everybodies to-listen-to list. I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW AWESOME THEY ARE THROUGH TEXT ALONE, LISTEN TO THEM!!!111oneone

Beirut
Postcards From Italy

Sweet otherworldly nostalgia is the best way I can describe Beirut, from a peronal perspective of course. To people attending Coachella this year: If you don’t catch their set, your totally missing out.
